A vector-based drawing tool is the type of program used to create logos and graphics comprised of lines and shapes. Probably the most well-known vector-based drawing program is Adobe Illustrator. So, the fact that Inkscape is free is actually pretty amazing.
The Express version of Embrilliance is a very useful fool for creating words, names, phrases, and monograms with BX fonts.
To use Express, you simply drag the BX font set into the program and then select it and start typing whatever you want with that typeface. You can even set the text on a curve, make the letters different sizes, etc… Once you build your letter-based design, you simply save it in the embroidery file format that your machine reads and load it onto your embroidery machine.
Unfortunately, with Express, you can not combine embroidery designs with the words you build. For that functionality, you would need Embrilliance Essentials. Embroidery Reader is a free option that allows you to open and view machine embroidery designs in PES format. In this program, you can quickly see what the machine embroidery design looks like on a variety of fabrics and even preview the design using different threads.
As the name implies, this program simply reads embroidery files. Put you can preview your designs with different colored threads and backgrounds and then save the resulting changes as an image.
Therefore, this is a useful tool if you just want to create images of your embroidery designs for quick previewing. Embroidery Reader can only be installed on a PC.
You would need an emulator program to run it on a MAC. Embroidermodder is another machine embroidery design editing tool that is free and open source. The only tricky part about this program is figuring out a way to download it.
The website takes you to the GIT repository which contains all of the original code. If you were inclined to edit the Embroidermodder code — then this is the place you want to got. But if you just want to download and install the program, you should head to the download available on the Softpedia site. There are quite a few editing capabilities built into this program. You can remove individual stitches and even entire parts of the design.
In addition, you can add stitches to the design. One interesting capability of this program is that it will allow you to add lettering to a design. Since the lettering options are dependent on the TTF fonts installed on your computer, the results may be questionable. Therefore, you could actually use this program as a embroidery file format conversion tool. Bernina ArtLink is a free machine embroidery software that is intended to help you get your embroidery files onto your Bernina embroidery machine.
You can open just about any format of embroidery file in Artlink. You can make some basic transformations to the design and change thread colors. If you need to convert it into another format, you would have to use a different program. If you have a newer Bernina embroidery machine then Artlink is a really useful piece of software because it offers several methods to send your design over to your machine. When I first discovered Wilcom Trueszier, I though it was just an incredibly useful tool for converting embroidery designs from one format into another.
But you can actually do a whole lot more with it. As I mentioned earlier, this means your computer displays an image of the embroidery design either as a drawing or a stitch simulation rather than its default icon. You can also view information about your embroidery files, such as stitch count, design size, thread colors, and a slow stitch out of the design with this program.
I also have another post detailing what I feel are the best embroidery software choices to investigate if looking to purchase. To note, Embird and Embrilliance have free trials also, but you cannot save files.
Brother has free embroidery software for Brother embroidery machines and others for that matter available as a trial, too. SewWhat-Pro is an embroidery editing and customization software that is very affordable.
It offers a day free trial with saves up to 3 colors. I also have a tutorial on how to make monograms from. This is what I started with before upgrading later.
SewArt is the companion embroidery digitizing software to SewWhat-Pro. It is an auto-digitizing software, so you are limited in what you can digitize and how effective it will be. For simple, clip-art images, results are fairly good! Meaning, you will have to input an image into the program to start the digitizing process. For beginners without aspirations of ever selling designs, I think this is a great option. Here is the link to the Hatch free day trial. Hatch has 4 different modules that build upon one another and can be purchased separately.
Composer allows for auto-digitizing, so if you do not want to do much manual creation, this is all you need. EmbroideryWare is a full-featured embroidery digitizing program that offers a day free trial. It does have a helpful Facebook group and a slew of YouTube videos, though. Best wishes! Thank you…this has been a great help. I need to practice so I need all the help I can get to become familiar and competent with the various software available.
This information was incredible and I appreciate the time and energy it took for you to review these different programs. I will never be a commercial embroiderer, but do have big plans to do lots of monogramming. Monograms and Greek letters for the sororities! Yay, so it looks like there probably are too options that will work the best for me and thanks to your information you probably have saved me hours of needless running around.
Thanks so much again, Sandy. Thank you so much for your post. I recently purchased a Brother PE and having serious problems converting my files from jpg to either day or pes format. Thank you again. Thank you so much for your valuable information.
